“How much does a retaining wall cost?” is one of the first questions almost every North Shore homeowner asks us, and it’s a fair one, because retaining walls can range from a straightforward garden edge to a significant structural project with council involvement. Here’s a realistic breakdown of what actually drives the price, based on the walls we build across Auckland. The figures below are general indicative ranges to help you budget, not a quote. Every site is different, and the only way to get an accurate number is a proper on-site assessment.

What Actually Drives Retaining Wall Costs

Four things move the price more than anything else: the height of the wall, the material you choose, ground conditions and access, and whether council consent and engineering are required. Two walls that look similar from the street can cost very different amounts once you factor in soil type, drainage requirements, and how easy it is to get materials and machinery onto the site.

Typical Cost Ranges by Material

As a rough guide for Auckland conditions, treated timber walls tend to sit at the more affordable end and suit smaller garden retaining jobs. Concrete sleeper and post walls cost more than timber but offer better longevity, particularly for taller walls. Poured concrete or blockwork walls sit toward the top of the range and are typically used where the wall is doing serious structural work, such as retaining a driveway or building platform. Natural stone or gabion walls vary widely depending on the stone used and the complexity of the design. Within any of these materials, low garden walls under 600mm are the cheapest to build and generally don’t need council consent. Costs increase from there, and the jump between a 600mm wall and a 1.5m wall is usually much bigger than the height difference alone would suggest, for reasons we’ll get into below. As a concrete starting point, our retaining walls under 1 metre in height start from $325 per linear metre, covering straightforward garden retaining jobs that don’t need engineering or council consent. Walls over 1 metre, or any wall that triggers consent and engineering requirements, are priced individually after a site visit, since the foundations, drainage, and structural design change significantly once you cross that threshold.
Wall type (small, low walls)Starting price
Treated timber (H5 posts, H4 sleepers)from $325 per linear metre
Concrete blockfrom $425 per linear metre
Gabion (rock-filled baskets)from $495 per linear metre
Prices include drainage, backfill and labour, plus GST, and rise with height. For how each material compares on lifespan and looks, see our retaining walls North Shore page.

Why Height Changes the Price Dramatically

A wall over roughly 1 to 1.5 metres has to resist significantly more soil pressure than a low garden wall, which usually means deeper foundations, engineered drainage behind the wall, and in many cases a producer statement from a structural engineer. This is where a lot of homeowners are surprised by quotes: it’s not that the contractor is charging more per metre for the same wall, it’s that a taller wall is genuinely a different, more demanding structure to build safely and to code.

Driveway Retaining Wall Costs

Driveway retaining walls are priced differently from garden walls, and it catches a lot of people out. A wall beside or below a driveway has to hold back the soil and the weight of parked and moving cars close to its top edge. Engineers call that extra weight a surcharge, and it changes three things:
  • Engineering and consent. The Building Act exemption for walls under 1.5 m only applies when nothing extra is loading the wall. A driveway is extra load, so most driveway walls need an engineer’s design and building consent even when they are under 1.5 m. Budget for engineering and council fees on top of the build.
  • Heavier construction. Expect deeper footings, larger or more closely spaced posts, or reinforced concrete block. That means more excavation, more concrete and more steel per metre than a garden wall of the same height.
  • Material choice. Concrete block is usually the best choice beside a driveway for strength and lifespan. Timber can work for some low driveway edges when it is engineered, and gabions suit wider sites where there is room for their base.
Because of these factors, driveway retaining walls are priced individually after a site visit rather than from a per-metre rate. If an existing driveway wall is leaning, cracking or bulging, get it looked at early. Replacing a failing wall costs far less than repairing a driveway that has started to slump. Hidden Costs Homeowners Often Miss

The wall itself is usually only part of the number. Budget for drainage behind the wall (non-negotiable in Auckland’s clay soils, and the single biggest cause of retaining wall failure we see), site access and excavation, especially on sloped sections, disposal of excavated soil, and reinstatement of the area in front of and behind the new wall, including planting or turf. A quote that looks unusually cheap compared to others is worth asking hard questions about, because drainage and proper footings are exactly the items that get skipped to hit a lower price, and skipping them is how walls fail.

Do You Need Council Consent?

In general, retaining walls under 1.5 metres that aren’t supporting a surcharge load (like a driveway, deck, or another structure above them) often don’t need building consent, but this depends on your specific site, soil type, and Auckland Council’s current requirements, so it should never be assumed. Walls that do need consent will also need an engineer involved, which adds cost but also gives you a producer statement and proper sign-off, which matters if you ever sell the property.

Getting an Accurate Quote

The only reliable way to know what your retaining wall will actually cost is a site visit. We look at the height and length you need, existing soil and drainage conditions, access for machinery, and whether consent is likely to apply, then give you a clear, itemised quote rather than a vague estimate.
